Calliandra californica, a beatiful shrub, is at home in the tropical garden as well as in marginal xeriscapes. It does prefer more water than other xeriscape plants which can tolerate drier conditions in pot but can easily withstand the occasional dry spell in the ground. It sports red flowers reminiscent of powder-puffs. They are born along the branches which have pinnate leaves and leads some gardners to call it a mimosa bush
